The Aquaculture Engineering Program enables professionals to contribute to the efficient production of aquatic food and by-products, serving both public and private organizations. The program has seven laboratories aimed at research and production (marine and freshwater fish farming, shrimp farming, shellfish farming, seaweed farming, pathology and nutrition), and two experimental farms for the cultivation of aquatic organisms.

The Aquaculture Engineering student gets an interdisciplinary view of the field, in a diverse range of subject areas and disciplines:

  • Aquaculture production techniques;
  • Biology, with a focus on taxonomy and morphology of aquatic organisms;
  • Embryology, larval development, ecophysiology, life cycles, pathology of aquatic organisms;
  • Artificial ecosystems used in aquaculture, as well as natural ecosystems associated with them in terms of their dynamics, control limits and manipulation;
  • Administration, sociology, economy, entrepreneurship: to the extent that it is required for the profession;
  • Engineering: sufficient knowledge to understand and act in the field of engineering that relates to aquaculture, particularly in terms of: topography, earthworks (pond construction), canal construction, hydraulic (pumping, piping, volumetric flow rate, etc.), sea structures, aeration systems, energy systems, filtration systems, water quality control systems, sanitary systems, electrical systems, mechanical systems, electronic systems, automated systems and computer technology, among others;
  • Processing technology for aquaculture products.

The Aquaculture Engineer will be able to:

  • Understand the social, economical, political and cultural reality in which aquaculture organizations operate;
  • Master the concepts of aquaculture and sustainable development, with knowledge of the rules and regulations concerning the use of the environment for aquaculture development, and of the mechanisms to reduce the activity’s social and environmental impact;
  • Apply aquaculture concepts, principles, methods and techniques to concrete situations in different hierarchical levels of state or private aquaculture organizations;
  • Work with awareness of the role they perform in society, one that contributes to the socio-economic development in compliance with the ethics and the law;
  • Identify and research current and future working fields in aquaculture engineering;
  • Design, plan and evaluate methodologies and techniques applicable to the cultivation of aquatic organisms from marine, fresh and brackish water environments;
  • Plan, design and manage companies aimed at the farming of aquatic organisms for commercial purposes;
  • Conduct research for the development, innovation and improvement of farming techniques and for the quality improvement of cultivated organisms.
