UFSC offers seven different programs in the field of languages and literature. Students looking to pursue studies in this field must choose among the following programs: English Language and Literatures (afternoon classes), French Language and Literatures (morning classes), German Language and Literatures (afternoon classes), Italian Language and Literatures (morning classes), Portuguese Language and Literatures (day and evening classes), and Spanish Language and Literatures (morning classes).

The programs will focus on the language, literature and culture of the countries where the chosen language is spoken. In the fifth semester, students may choose if they want to follow a teaching career. If they opt for a teaching degree, students must complete a teaching practicum in public or private schools. If not, courses are focused on research and prepare students for the writing of a final thesis. The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures also offers an undergraduate degree program in Executive Secretarial Science (evening classes).

Language and Literature graduates can work in primary and secondary education, as well as teaching in language schools and in preparation courses for university entrance examinations. Other career opportunities include interpretation in meetings and conferences, technical and literary translation, text revision and proofreading, and academic research in Literature and Linguistics.
