In consonance with the National Curriculum Guidelines, UFSC Medicine Program has developed an educational project which was constructed collectively, focused on a student-centered learning, in which the role of the professor is one of a facilitator and mediator in the teaching and learning process. Its goal is to provide a full and appropriate education through the articulation of teaching, research, outreach and assistance.
Integrated activities enable the student to build a global theoretical-practical framework that is more significant and closer to the challenges s/he will face in the dynamic reality of the professional practice.
The integrated curriculum covers the first four years of studies, with an early introduction of the student into the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS) and the surgical clinical practice. The next two years are dedicated to the medical internship, which includes practical activities and in-service training in the fields of internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, gynecology and obstetrics, and family health/collective health.
The learning settings are the University Hospital, the primary health care network of Florianópolis Municipal Health Department, four state hospitals (Joana de Gusmão Infant Hospital, Carmela Dutra Maternity, Celso Ramos Hospital and Nereu Ramos Hospital), and laboratories from primary health departments and clinics.
The modules comprise cognitive, attitudinal and procedural knowledge and form the basis of a medical education focused on the health needs of the population and of the Unified Health System, aimed at health care comprehensiveness. The complementary activities also allow for the construction of a “nuclear curriculum”, in such a way that the student can engage in specific areas of knowledge, according to personal preferences and aptitudes.
