Services for the Community
Several projects at the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC) offer services free of charge to the university community and the community in general.
As a pillar of the university’s institutional mission, the outreach projects play a fundamental role in the integration between university and society. Activities are developed in a wide range of areas, such as culture and art, sports, health and leisure, technology, innovation and entrepreneurship, internationalization, social inclusion and diversity, and environmental sustainability.
The university outreach helps the institution to remain able to respond to external needs though the knowledge acquired with the interactions provided by these actions. In addition, it helps consolidate the training of new professionals endowed with social conscience.
Some of these actions are presented here. Check them out by category:

Dentistry
#Elective/routine services are temporarily suspended at the UFSC Dental Clinic due to a suppressed demand of around 800 patients.
The UFSC Dental Clinic offers emergency care services to the community in weekday mornings and afternoons, during the academic terms. Spontaneous demands are met upon a triage to assess the severity of the patients’ condition. After being assessed, patients are informed of their situation and receive the appropriate treatment according to the clinic’s availability and the priority classification.
After the triage, patients receive a counter-reference form filled out with the risk classification and, if they were treated, the procedures adopted in the clinic. Then, they are instructed to return to their local Health Center with the form for evaluation by the dental surgeon, who will determine the adequate follow-up treatment.
Currently, the Dental Clinic is on the process of aligning itself with the Unified Health System (SUS), and has been working in partnership with the Municipal Health Department and the State Heath Department.

Through this support, it allows the clinical management of patients in Primary Care who were previously referred to medium complexity care, contributing to the regional control of users of the Unified Health System (SUS). Such actions avoid unnecessary referrals, qualifying and optimizing the access to Specialized Care.
The Center also provides pedagogical support for the production of distance education activities aimed at health professionals, in accordance with the principles and guidelines of the National Policy on Permanent Health Education.
