UFSC Journalism Program prepares students for a career as reporters, photographers, editorial designers, writers or editors in newspapers, magazines, radio, TV, internet, news agencies and press offices, either employed, as a freelancer or as an entrepreneur. Since the early stages, the student is in contact with the practice of journalism through technical courses held in the laboratories of Radio Journalism, TV Journalism,  Photojournalism, Writing, Online Journalism and Infographics.

For four consecutive years (1999-2002), the program obtained grade A, the highest score in the country, in the Provão, a national exam that used to be carried out by the Ministry of Education to assess undergraduate programs. Due to its growing concern with the specificities of journalism teaching and practice, the program abandoned its former name, “Social Communication – Journalism qualification”, thus making it simpler and more suitable to the degree offered.

The curriculum offers a number of theoretical courses which ground the professional practice. This includes: Journalism Ethics; Aesthetics and Mass Culture; Theory and Research Methodology in Communication; Corporate Communication; Media Relations; Communication Policies; Theories of Communication and of Journalism; among others. The program has partnerships with private companies, like the regional TV network RBS-SC, and corporate entities, such as the National Federation of Journalists (FENAJ). These partnerships allow students to establish contact with professional journalists and expand their training. The program also has an internship agreement with the Globo TV network, located in Rio de Janeiro.

As a way of experiencing the practice even further, UFSC Journalism students can engage in outreach projects and earn scholarships in the various fields of journalism. In radio journalism, the student can participate in an online radio station, Rádio Ponto UFSC. In the internet, students also produce articles for the website Cotidiano, which brings news about UFSC and the Brazilian higher education. The lab newspaper Zero is another possibility for journalism practice offered by the program at UFSC.

The program’s facilities also include professional TV and radio studios, photography, infographics, computer and writing laboratories, and the New Media Laboratory, where websites are produced and experiences with new technology resources for communication are tried out.
