The results of the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2021, an annual study by Quacquarelli Symonds, were published this Wednesday, 3 March, revealing the top universities for 51 different subjects, in five broad subject areas. The Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina was ranked in three out of the five subject areas: Arts and Humanities; Engineering and Technology; and Life Sciences and Medicine.

In Engineering and Technology, UFSC was ranked the third best among Brazilian federal universities and sixth best in Brazil, with emphasis on the subjects of Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and Chemical Engineering. In Arts and Humanities, UFSC is the fifth best among the federal universities and ninth best in Brazil, excelling in English Language and Literature, Architecture, and Linguistics. In Life Sciences and Medicine, UFSC is the sixth best among the federal universities and ninth best in Brazil, with emphasis on Agriculture and Forestry.

The area of Engineering and Technology had the best score, with 62.7 (ranked 368th among all universities); followed by Arts and Humanities, with 59.9 (ranked 400th in the global ranking); and Life Sciences and Medicine, with 56.8 (ranked between 401-450). The other broad subject areas were also evaluated, but the university was not ranked (it is uncommon, the study points out, for a university to be ranked in all five areas and subjects).

For the World University Rankings by Subject 2021, the QS team analyzed more than 13.9 million unique papers, producing around 81 million citations. The study ranked 1453 institutions.

Each university included in the 2021 rankings was evaluated based on four indicators: academic reputation, employer reputation, research citations per paper, and H-index, which measures the productivity and impact of the published work of a scientist or scholar.

Check out UFSC’s performance in each indicator by broad subject area:

Subject Area Academic Employer Citations H-index Score
Arts and Humanities 63.4 54.9 63.4 45.5 59.9
Engineering and Technology 64.7 53.6 74.9 63.6 62.7

Methodology

The 2021 rankings analyzed about 14,000 individual university programs from 1,440 universities in 85 locations worldwide. The combination of the above indicators allows for the institution disseminating the rankings to measure how each university is seen externally and the quality of the academic activities carried out in that institution. The universities with the best performance in all four indicators are the ones top ranked in each individual subject.
