UFSC Nutrition program aims to prepare professionals who are committed to the improvement of people’s quality of life. The nutritionist applies knowledge of dietetics and considers nutrition as a fundamental factor influencing human growth and development throughout all life stages, from gestation to childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and old age.

Students are trained to perform the following tasks: assessment and monitoring of the nutritional status of the population (preschoolers, children, adolescents, athletes, among others); evaluation of the quality of school meals; surveillance of the nutritional status of the population in schools and health units; elaboration of quality projects for the production of collective and commercial meals; disease prevention, recovery and health promotion of the population, through nutritional counseling and diet therapy; development of experimental research on food; and development of education actions on health and nutrition for individuals and communities.

Since the early stages, courses provide contact opportunities with the professional activities. From the third year on, theoretical-practical courses are offered in the fields of basic nutrition, clinical nutrition, experimental nutrition, public health, management of food service units and sports nutrition. The University Hospital (HU) as well as other public and private partner institutions are learning settings for practical courses, short internships, and curricular and extracurricular internships. Students can develop activities at several well-equipped laboratories (Experimental Nutrition, Nutritional Biochemistry I and II, Dietetics, Anthropometry and Ergonomics, Means for Collective Feeding, Means for Nutritional Education) and at the HU’s outpatient nutrition clinics.

UFSC Nutrition program is the only one in Brazil that has a metabolic unit, located at the University Hospital, which enables studies on the absorption of food by the human body, and the only one to have a Junior Enterprise in Nutrition. Students can apply for scholarships in the Tutorial Education Program (PET), offered by the Ministry of Education, and for research, outreach or student tutoring scholarships, besides working as volunteers in projects of the Department of Nutrition. Graduates can follow a career in the fields of clinical nutrition, public health, experimental nutrition, management of collective and commercial food service units, and sports nutrition.

Nutritionists work in a number of environments, such as hospitals, clinics, spas, health units, child care centers, collective and commercial food service units, industries, sports centers, clubs, gyms, companies, non-profit organizations or public institutions engaged with food programs. They can also work in the areas of marketing and consulting, customer service and guidance, research on new food and food products, diet and low-calorie food, quality assurance in the production of meals, and in programs for the adoption of adequate eating habits and practices for different populations, working in multidisciplinary teams.

Profile of the graduate:

The Nutrition graduate should be a socially-responsible professional, with broad qualification; autonomous in the pursuit of knowledge; sensitive and critical in regard to the social, economic, political and cultural reality; able to understand the human being and the world in their entirety; and capable of acting as agent of transformation, working in a committed, ethical, sustainable and interdisciplinary way in all fields of knowledge where food and nutrition are central to the promotion, maintenance and restoration of health of individuals and the community.

Courses are held during the day.

UFSC Nursing Program prepares professionals who are committed to the needs of the population and concerned with public health policies. The nurse can work in public and private health networks, hospitals, outpatient clinics, clinics in general, homes and industries.

In the first year, students take core courses, and from the second year on, they enroll in specific and practical courses. The University Hospital (HU) is the program’s main laboratory. Most of the classes are held at the hospital and, before degree completion, students must pass through all of the hospital’s departments.

Another way to experience the practice of their future career is serving in heath centers’ outpatient clinics. Students can also participate in research and outreach groups. In the University Hospital, there are groups focused on diabetes, cancer, hypertension and pregnancy, among others.

To develop awareness of the role of the nurse practitioner within society, students take courses in Health and Society, Nursing in the Social Context and Psychology.

The program also encourages extracurricular internships in research and outreach. Students can take internships at any place as long as there is a professional to supervise their work, such as in companies, clinics and nursing homes. Nursing students also participate in the Universidade Solidária program, a national program that promotes outreach and engagement between universities and communities across the country.

The Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering program provides students with a systemic view of engineering, developed through a diversified curriculum, to prepare for a career in planning, construction, maintenance and disposal of naval systems – including conventional and special vessels, port and oceanic structures. Graduates can also work in interdisciplinary engineering fields, such as mechanical, electrical, production, metallurgical, materials, transportation and logistics, infrastructure engineering, among others.

Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering is becoming an outstanding field in Brazil due to current and future demands in the following sectors: shipbuilding for gas, oil, container and cargo shipping; shipbuilding of touring, security and platform support vessels; coastal and inland navigation; port operations; and ocean exploitation, in view of the important deep sea oil (pre-salt) exploration activity carried out in Brazil.

Taking into account the large number of museums across the state of Santa Catarina and the lack of professionals in the field, UFSC Museum Studies program was created to fill this gap, with the aim of preparing professionals to set the guidelines for education, conservation and cultural policies in regard to heritage assets.

The museum professional is particularly concerned with cultural heritage and engages in the collection, conservation, preservation and exhibition of cultural assets in museums. In order to prepare graduates for this role, the Museum Studies program provides a comprehensive training on museology, emphasizing its interdisciplinary nature and fostering dialogue with the fields of history and anthropology, understood in their broad sense.

The program aims to contribute to: the growth of museum theory; the interweaving of related scientific and academic areas; the enhancement of national, regional, state and municipal museum policies; the development of initiatives in cultural and educational agencies, such as museums, historical memory centers, art galleries, government agencies concerned with cultural heritage, higher education institutions, research institutes, among others; and the advancement of methodologies and techniques for museum conservation, documentation and diffusion.

It also seeks to ensure a training that is, at the same time, solid and broad enough to enable graduates to fully perform their professional tasks, as well as to provide them with an in-depth theoretical grounding and the possibility to engage in advanced research in the field.

Meteorology is an applied physical science that studies the processes that govern the behavior of the atmosphere and its interactions with the Earth’s surface, especially with the ocean. Its objective is to understand and predict atmospheric phenomena by use of traditional physical equations as well as mathematical and computational tools.

Recently, several extreme weather and climatic events have affected the country and, in particular, many of these events occurred in the state of Santa Catarina, such as: floods, tornadoes, snow and hail precipitation, cyclones and the hurricane Catarina. The meteorologist has a central role in the understanding and forecasting of these events.

In the early stages, UFSC Meteorology students take general courses that give the basis for the understanding of complex atmospheric processes: Physics, Calculus and Computer Science. In the later stages, thermodynamic knowledge is applied to the study of precipitation and cloud formation and development; the physics of radiation is applied for the understanding of the atmosphere thermal structure and the establishment of methods for the observation and measurement of atmospheric phenomena; and the principles of fluid dynamics are learned to understand the movements of weather systems which determine weather and climate on all scales. All these processes are diagnosed through an extensive use of computational techniques.

Meteorologists are required in a number of activity sectors that use information on weather and climate. These include civil defense, agriculture, civil and military aviation and navigation, energy and water resources management sector, environmental impact studies and pollution control, market and economic planning, insurance sector, and support to the organization of sport, tourism and entertainment events.

Courses are held during the day.

In consonance with the National Curriculum Guidelines, UFSC Medicine Program has developed an educational project which was constructed collectively, focused on a student-centered learning, in which the role of the professor is one of a facilitator and mediator in the teaching and learning process. Its goal is to provide a full and appropriate education through the articulation of teaching, research, outreach and care.

Integrated activities enable the student to build a global theoretical-practical framework that is more significant and closer to the challenges they will face in the dynamic reality of the professional practice.

The integrated curriculum covers the first four years of studies, with an early introduction of the student into the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS) and the surgical clinical practice. The next two years are dedicated to the medical internship, which includes practical activities and in-service training in the fields of internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, gynecology and obstetrics, and family health/collective health.

The learning settings are the University Hospital, the primary health care network of the Florianópolis Municipal Health Department, four state hospitals (Joana de Gusmão Infant Hospital, Carmela Dutra Maternity, Celso Ramos Hospital and Nereu Ramos Hospital), and laboratories from primary health departments and clinics.

The modules comprise cognitive, attitudinal and procedural knowledge and form the basis of a medical education focused on the health needs of the population and of the Unified Health System, aimed at health care comprehensiveness. The complementary activities also allow for the construction of a “nuclear curriculum”, in such a way that the student can engage in specific areas of knowledge, according to personal preferences and aptitudes.

The Mechatronics Engineering program provides students with a systemic view of engineering, developed through a scaled and diversified curriculum and aimed at the design of embedded systems. More specifically, the professional will be able to design and develop embedded systems based on microcontrollers, including the assembly and maintenance of hardware structures and the development of the dedicated software.

Mechatronics Engineering graduates find large demand and acceptance in the job market due to their multidisciplinary qualification. With the emphasis on embedded systems and the solid scientific and technological preparation in terms of mechanical, electromechanical and electronics processes, graduates will have the opportunity to apply the knowledge acquired to the development of systems projects for vehicles and for domestic, electronic and medical equipment. Another possibility is to work in interdisciplinary engineering fields, such as mechanical, electrical, production, metallurgical, materials, transportation and logistics, and infrastructure engineering.

UFSC offers three distinct Production Engineering programs, with focus on Civil Production, Mechanical Production or Electrical Production. They prepare professionals not only to acquire the technical skills and competences necessary for a career in the chosen area (civil, mechanical or electrical), but also to perform management and leadership functions at all levels of organization.

The program includes basic courses in the corresponding area of engineering, as well as specific courses on Production Engineering, such as Production Management (organization of production, production planning and control, just in time production, flexible systems, logistics), Product Engineering (new products, ergonomics, value analysis), Productivity and Quality Management (total quality, project quality, functional analysis, performance analysis), Management of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises, Engineering Economics (analysis of industrial projects, strategic planning, engineering evaluation, technological innovation) and Project Management. Within this context, the production engineer is equipped with a systemic view of companies and projects and is therefore qualified to make decisions.

In Brazil, the production engineer is concerned with the new standards of quality and productivity and works in a wide range of activities in industries, infra-structure, civil construction, agriculture, business and government agencies. The professional in this area is instrumental in the development of new production systems in all fields of economic and business activity.

Graduates from this program will be awarded the title of Mechanical Engineer, with a qualification in Mechanical Production Engineering.

The UFSC Product Design program is structured by the articulation between areas of knowledge, the deepening of knowledge in product design, and the association and synthesis of the acquired knowledge applied to the solution of project problems. This allows for a greater approximation between students and the market.

For degree completion, the student must meet the required class hours (3456) consisting of compulsory courses (including a curricular internship), a final project, elective courses and/or complementary activities. See the curriculum structure below.
